Cookbook USA
OK - they're trying to sell you a CD full of recipes. They allow to search the database of "over a million" recipes over the web. Very cool. So there's 128 variations on Snickerdoodles - every other recipe I could think of was also in there.

Christina's World
A Personal Homepage. Egad.
Well, it's a very well designed and entertaining homepage. Christina Craft (chief web publisher at Corel Corporation) has this site which includes the wonderful "Totally True Diaries of an Eighties Barrie Queen," and of course the requisite cool links, resume, and pictures of friends.
November 10th, 1996:
Stale
Yummy! Stale, if you didn't guess, is a parody of Slate - Microsoft/NBC's err, um, "magazine." Published by some sort of online service called the Transom, Stale has the look and smell of of Slate but it tastes so much better! If you feel the need for a little MSNBC bashing, this is the place.
I particularly liked the Editor's Note:
The editors of STALE felt many pangs of regret while working on this project. The truth is we have deep respect for Michael Kinsley as a writer and editor. We also respect the talents of many of Slate's contributors. We trust that these people, if not their corporate masters, will take this parody in the spirit in which it was intended. Finally, we really do believe that Microsoft is evil.

The Witches' League for Public Awareness

The Useless Fact Archives
Deborah Henigson & Jennifer Godwin have collected a dizzying array little-known and useless facts. Well, maybe facts - their disclaimer states:"These facts are not checked for accuracy. Please do not use them in your thesis or your Inagural Address until you have verified them on your own."
Some quick samples:
  • In Disney's "Fantasia", the Sorcerer's name is "Yensid" (Disney backwards.)
  • Jamie Farr (who played Klinger on M*A*S*H) was the only member of the cast who actually served as a soldier in the Korean war.
  • The only person ever to decline a Pulitzer Prize for Fiction was Sinclair Lewis for his book Arrowsmith.
  • Lizzie Borden was acquitted.
  • Lorne Greene had one of his nipples bitten off by an aligator while he hosted "Lorne Greene's Wild Kingdom."
  • Pierre, South Dakota is the only example of a state and capital in the U.S. that don't share any letters.

The Adventures of Alex the Ape Online
Please forgive me for picking this cute and fuzzy site, but it is just really well done. The proprietors are, in fact trying to sell you videos, stuffed toys and T-shirts, but they're not being blatant about it. I had fun visiting Mystic Island, and I suspect you will too. This site is unrated, but extremely kid-friendly.
September 9th, 1996:
Gallery Of The Absurd
I've got another one of those truly strange sites this week. This one is a special piece of Americana...
Derek has collected strange product advertisements, labels, and signs that he found disturbing, frightening, or intriguing. Everything from a sign proclaiming the "Home of the hand-spanked burger" to an ad for the "Fallick Center for Cosmetic Surgery."
August 18th, 1996:
Deceitful Monkey
You are not welcome at deceitful monkey.
It is a dangerous and beguiling place. Somewhere deep in the heart of the Monkey Forest lies the monkey's house. That's where you must go.....track monkey to his secret homestead. There, you may learn the amazing truth about minoxidil, or be instantly killed by inhumane traps set by monkey himself. Either way, it will be an interesting journey....and there's a pretty good chance you may walk away with some fabulous monkey prizes! (seriously). But, in order to survive in the Monkey Forest, you must be ever vigilant, watchful, and mindful of any information you come across. It just could save your life. Monkey does not like interlopers in his kingdom, and he will try to lure you to your destruction. Take heart, though Ð if monkey just wanted to get rid of you, he'd already have beaten you to death with a stick......so, on with the chase!!

*This site is gross, rude, and profane. You have been warned.*

August 4th, 1996:
Rancho DeNada
At Rancho DeNada, they write songs ("alternative country", whatever that means), play dominoes, and relax. This site has a bunch of excellent features including "Bub Tales" (the story of the lawyer-tycoon-woman), "All Drunked Up" (What would you expect from country song writers?), "The Rag Shack" (an absolutely amazing list of magazines with web sites) and "Ask Becky" (ask mom for advice). Wait, there's so much more...
July 21st, 1996:
The Temple of Jackie Chan
Tribute to the living legend Jackie Chan. Analyze the spine bending stunts, the real life injuries and the lightning fast fighting. Super charged cinema. All the latest news and updates on the man.
July 14th, 1996:
The Page Formerly Known As The Mostly Text Page
I really don't know what this is supposed to be about..."Michael" has created this page full of truly strange and wonderful things. Things like "The Jihad Against the Hat People," assorted quotes from the folks at work... just really weird stuff.
July 7th, 1996:
Rewind
For the 80s music nut in you, check out "Rewind" -- an interactive name that tune game that features music clips from the last decade. This is part of the "80s Server" site. Falco to Rubik's cube, Miami Vice to Mary Lou Reton; everything you could want on the 80s.
June 23rd, 1996:
The Fray Ormandy Home Page
Fray L. Ormandy is the main character of the cartoon "Did You Know?" She is the chick with a cancer stick. She is the chukka boot chick. She is uberchick. She is basically all of the attitude and none of the responsibility.
May 19th, 1996:
The Dr. Hannibal Lecter Hompage
Complete with Lecter sounds, Lecter links, Lecter analysis, and the infamous new ad campaign: "Got Liver?"
"I do wish we could chat longer, but I'm having an old friend for dinner..."
May 12th, 1996:
Isle of Skye
This wonderfully programmed site features "Interactive Tools of Self-discovery." I found the Astrological Reports to be extremely interesting. Whether you believe in this stuff or not, you'll probabably enjoy this laid-back site. This link bypasses the splash screen and gets you straight to the good stuff.
April 14th, 1996:
webreference.com
Andy King has created a very useful reference for those who are interested in learning how to create web sites or those who just need the latest poop. This site features regular articles, reviews, links to news - just about anything and everything you need to know to create a web site.
April 7th, 1996:
Ontario Cemetery Finding Aid
At first, I didn't understand what on earth this page was for. I thought it was going to be a database of available cemetery plots. Oops. They've cataloged over a million (occupied) cemetery plots in Ontario. If you're even remotely interested in genealogy, you'll find this site fascinating.
March 24th, 1996
Good Times Virus Hoax FAQ
This is getting ridiculous. In one week, I relieved three emails and a FAX from people asking me about the "Good Times Virus." This wonderful FAQ by Les Jones helps describe and explain this bizarre phenomenon.
March 3rd, 1996:
Just Too Much Friends
...So we surfed the web for research material and planned to write a Manifesto exposing the conspiracy. But, in the middle of a text search, our reliable search engine suddenly seized. When we resuscitated it, it had changed. Like David Banner's unfortunate encounter with gamma rays, our little web crawler emerged from his exposure to the crapweasels sites...mutated. It thought it was the Friends -- all six of them...
Februray 25th, 1996:
The T.W.I.N.K.I.E.S Project
Some fun-loving guys at Rice demonstrated their knowledge of The Scientific Method and conducted a series of experiments on the "Golden Sponge Cake with Creamy Filling." The Twinkies were subjected to various stimuli with its reactions recorded, photographed, and placed on this home page. Some of the experiments inspired works of, er, art; including some Haiku: Moist golden sponge cake
Creamy white filling of joy
Boy, I love twinkies
Februray 11th, 1996:
Decapitate an Angel
"To play is easy and fun, not to mention in rather poor taste. To win, simply smack the Angel on the head by clicking with your pointer. Striking areas other than the head will cause you to be ridiculed, or possibly even condemned to Hell. (Although playing this game will probably get you sent there anyway.) "
January 28th, 1996:
RockWeb
"Rockweb Interactive is a place in Cyberspace where bands that care about their fans can invite them into their virtual homes and get to know them. It is a place where the fans can congregate and dig into the vibe of these bands, read about them, listen to their music, look at their pictures and artwork, and participate in discussion about the music or related topics."
Cool bands, RealAudio, chat sections, and a responsive staff who cares. How cool is that?
January 21st, 1996:
Stormy's Simplistic Solutions.
Tara has done some very nice things with line art and bit-mapped text to create a lovely web site. A feline theme pervades the site with areas like "The Litterbox" which is a kind of guestbook for pets.
January 14th, 1996:
Movie Link
From those 777-FILM folks; an on-line version of their movie listings database. It's attractive, fast, and functional - what more do you want in a web site?
(One note: all of the audio samples are in WAV format. Set up your helper applications appropriately, or use the NetShark browser.)
January 7, 1996:
The Spam Cam
"How does Spam decompose compared to other organic materials?" This web site lets you find out for yourself. Every day around 12:00 Noon Pacific Coast Time, a picture of a chunk of Spam is uploaded to web. Sure, it's science; but is it art?
